Rear view mirrors and caravans

When heading away on a holiday in Britain, extension mirrors for cars are required to be fitted by UK law to most cars while towing a caravan. The improved peripheral vision they give significantly lowers the risk of having an accident.

The laws relating to mirrors changed back in 2010, but the situation is still quite complex to understand. The reality is that the vast majority of caravanners’ towers will require two additional (extension mirrors) to tow a caravan legally.

Most standard mirrors do not provide an adequate view to the rear when a caravan is being towed unless it is the same width as the car or less. A large towing vehicle (eg a larger 4x4 like a Range Rover etc) with a relatively narrow caravan might achieve this, but even if that is the case, fitting additional mirrors will further improve your vision to the rear of the outfit. We've put together a handy guide on how to choose the right towing mirrors that goes into further detail regarding the types available.

Therefore, additional mirrors will normally need to be fitted on the nearside and offside when towing but removed when driving solo.

As a rule, for a typical car-caravan combination, you need to be able to see a zone at least 4-5 metres wider than the caravan at a distance of about 10-20 metres behind the caravan. Imagine being in the middle lane on a motorway, you need to see an approaching vehicle on either side of your outfit.

The types of mirrors you can have

Mirrors that clip onto the existing car mirror

These are quick and easy to fit and can be used on the nearside or offside. The mirror face is often adjustable. Methods of attachment vary, but often one or more straps loop around the back of the existing mirror and are tightened to provide a secure fit. Most mirrors are of this type, including most of the lower-cost options.

Mirrors that mount onto the car door

These often grip the door underside and slot into the space between the side window and the window rubber. They are adjustable from the driving position and tend to vibrate less than wing-mounted types.

Other considerations

When towing a caravan, make sure you're fully equipped for the journey. We recommend finding out more about the different types of towbars available, as well as reading up on caravan stabilisers if you plan to go caravanning this year.
