Clean Air Charging Zone

Local authorities and councils are moving towards introducing clean air zones

Certain evidence has come to light that shows that spending time in areas of high levels of air pollution can damage your lungs, give symptoms of asthma and can impact on your life span.

London, Birmingham and Leeds local authorities are looking to bring in the Clean Air Charging Zone (CAZ) to reduce air pollution and also try to protect everyone’s health. These measures can be confined to a single road or area of a town/city which the authorities deem to require a CAZ.

If your car/motorbike exceeds the standard emissions, you may have to pay an additional charge when you drive within these areas.

There are however some exceptions to this rule:-

  • Vehicles that have ultra-low emissions
  • Disabled passenger tax class vehicle
  • Any form of Military vehicle
  • Any form of Historic vehicle

A vehicle that has been retrofitted with approved technology by the CAZ scheme (Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme).

You can find out more about the exemptions from the local councils in the areas you drive. Follow the link and check your vehicle registration to find out more about the scheme https://www.gov.uk/check-clean-air-zone-charge.
